I am humbled to be able to provide care for my patients. I look forward to seeing my patients, to hearing about their lives, their families, and their problems. A person isn't their medical issues. Their medical issues do not define them. They are real people with loved ones who depend on them and love them. My job is to make sure they can be the best they can be for themselves and their families. I became a nurse to make sure that every patient I interact with is cared for like they are my family member. When I came to geriatric care, I realized I love this group of patients. They are amazing to listen to and just want to be heard. I want my patient's care to be a collaboration between the two of us. I want them to feel comfortable to ask any questions so plans of care can be manageable and achievable. We review everything - what the family’s expectations are, the likely outcomes, and what we can be realistic about achieving. I want to keep it real and work hard to help them reach their goals. Family members and caregivers should also be a part of the conversation and the plan. Every person's concerns regarding the patient are valid and important. I listen and validate concerns. I try to ensure that I address those concerns. It is rewarding to listen to a problem that was overcome by a patient. When someone regains quality of life or sees a resolution of an issue, it is a pleasure to watch them smile, laugh or be joyful.
